Lynn Weber has been practicing in the mental health field, or as she likes to call it, the healing profession for over 20 years. She began as a counselor in the early 70s before she had even completed her undergraduate work in psychology. It took 12 long years of working during the day and going to school at night, before she was awarded her Masters Degree in Administrative Social Work from Wayne State University in April 1984.
Yet, despite her success in academics, Lynn always believed that her real education would occur through her experiences in the world as a practicing therapist and counselor. In her first job, she started out learning the dynamics of addiction. Many of her clients were young men returning from Vietnam addicted to heroin and suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome. She moved on to provide services to battered women and sexual assault victims. She marched in Ann Arbor in the "Take Back the Night" rallies and she fought for women's rights and liberation from a patriarchal system. This included the treatment of women within the criminal justice system and the availability of services to battered women and their children in safe, secure shelters. Not only was this a time of great change for her clients, but it was also a time of great transition and change in her own life. In 1982, she burned her bra, divorced her husband and moved to the city of Detroit to finish her formal education. Upon completion of her Master's Degree, Lynn became an administrator for a large group of mental health clinics. However, this did not mean she no longer saw clients seeking healing. Throughout this time she maintained a private practice. Over the years this practice has grown until it now represents her sole focus of employment. When talking to Lynn you are struck by the unique mixture of clinical knowledge, spiritual intuition and common sense that she brings to her counseling. She knows that to be a healer you must heal yourself. She knows that her clients are her mirrors and her teachers. Lynn has never stopped growing and participating in her own personal transformation and healing. When her sister, Lorraine invited her to participate in the very first Changing Woman Weekend she didn't hesitate to step in. However, her love affair with the Changing Woman Sisterhood did not immediately appear. Although Lynn knew that something very powerful was happening she could not yet devote the time and energy needed for such a commitment. However, her respect and trust in her sister kept her interested and involved on the sidelines and eventually she jumped with her whole being onto the EarthWalk bandwagon. Once the commitment was made, Lynn participated in all the existing works and became a founding member of the EarthWalk Spiritual Center. She has been directly involved in creating, producing, facilitating and assisting in EarthWalk productions. Lynn sits on the Wisdom Council, and she sees herself as holding a powerful piece of the vision and the dream for EarthWalk. She is also the editor of this newsletter. Today Lynn is developing a healing practice that is not dependent on managed care and third party insurance. She believes that these systems conflict with her belief in treating the whole person and the underlying causes of dis-ease by focusing on the medical model for only treating symptoms. She is also devoting more time to EarthWalk. Last year she became a certified Hypnotherapist. She is currently working with a sister in the Changing Woman Sisterhood Circle to create a new service to help the children. Lynn is readily available to talk with someone who is in need of feedback ad healing wisdom and has been a great source of insight and change to many of the members of the EarthWalk community. Lynn knows that on this EarthWalk compassion and love hold the power of healing |
